Ian McKellen turned down an insane amount of money to officiate a wedding as Gandalf
Raise your hand if you’d love to be married by a wizard. Well, if you planned on asking The Lord of the Rings‘ Gandalf to officiate your ceremony, we can tell you right now that it’s a solid “no” from him, guys.
We’re honestly not trying to shade your unique wedding ideas, but it’s just not going to happen, even if you’re famous and rolling in dough. According to Mashable, Sir Ian McKellen passed on a $1.5 million offer to dress up like Gandalf and officiate the wedding of Napster founder and former Facebook president Sean Parker.
So, what gives? Did McKellen overhear Parker co-signing that crazy fan theory that Gandalf wasn’t a real wizard? Maybe he bristled at the thought of sitting in hair and makeup longer than the bride to make sure his beard and hair were up to her standards.
“I was offered $1.5 million to marry a very famous couple in California, which I would perhaps have considered doing, but I had to go dressed as Gandalf,” McKellen explained to The Daily Mail. “So I said, ‘I am sorry. Gandalf doesn’t do weddings.'”
This honestly sounded like a kick-ass idea, but clearly Gandalf wasn’t feeling it. We thought there were no bounds to your power Gandalf, but we suppose a wizard of your stature is way too preoccupied with casting spells and being legendary to deal with overseeing a marriage ceremony between two mere mortals.
