The crisp fall weather means it’s time to bring out cozier clothes, including that autumn staple: the boot. Not to mention all the other fun accessories that usually go with boots, like patterned tights and retro knee socks.

This week’s DIY helps you make your own pair of lace-trimmed knee socks, perfect for pairing with boots. The lace just peeks over the edge of taller designs, providing a delicate contrast with the heavier footwear. And since this DIY uses store-bought socks, you can easily finish your craft in the time it takes to watch your favorite TV show!

Materials:

  • Knee socks
  • 1 1/2-inch wide lace in any color
  • Thread in a corresponding color to the socks
  • Basic sewing needle
  • Straight pins
  • Scissors
  • Measuring tape

Craft away:

  • Put the socks on and measure around your leg where the socks end.
  • Add an inch to that measurement, and cut two pieces of lace to that length.

  • Flip the socks inside out. Pin the lace to the inside of the socks, keeping the edge of the lace close to the edge of the socks, and stretching the socks to fit them to the lace. Make sure the lace overlaps in the back of the socks to hide your work.

  • Cut a couple of feet of thread and fold it in half, then thread the needle and tie a knot.
  • Sew the lace to the socks, keeping your stitches small. Stretch the socks out as you sew to ensure they will fit when you are finished. Remember to knot your thread!

  • Turn the socks right side out, slip them out with some tights and cute boots and show off your cozy, layered style!
