We love yoga, we love self care, and we love inclusivity, so when we learned about Black Girl In Om, our hearts pretty much lit right up. Founded by Lauren Ash, Black Girl In Om is all about good vibes based in collective wellness and a focus on restoration. The website reads, “Black Girl In Om creates space for women of color to breathe easy.” It’s seriously so rad all around.

The Instagram itself is full of inspiration, and the captions for each photo provides incredible positivity. In an interview with She/Folk, Ash opened up about the reasoning behind Black Girl In Om and her hopes for the future of the project.

It’s about self care

“I think it’s a beautiful thing to be able to recognize what you need and then make it for yourself,” Ash told She/Folk. “I am surrounded by people who do just that and want to cultivate it as my own practice, as well.”

It’s about finding yourself where you are

“We affirm through our work the consistent, preventative actions that cultivate a clarity of mind, a strength of body, a prosperity of spirit, and an inspiration in our environments.”

It’s about connecting with others with similar goals

“We carry out this mission through our online publication, certainly, but also through our events,” Ash told She/Folk. “From our monthly Food Church series, where we partner with a health-conscious foodie who guides us through a healthful, holistic meal, to our weekly Wednesday Recharge yoga session when we gather to practice yoga and dialogue about how to practice yoga off the mat, we cultivate our mission dynamically and are always looking for new ways to activate our mission!”

Just like, yes, yes, and yes. The point of this project isn’t that white women don’t need any of these things. We all do. But it’s rather to give space for women of color, specifically, to find themselves and learn about themselves in a space that is focused on their needs — and that’s so important.

We are wildly in love with what these women are doing, and can’t wait to see what they accomplish next!
