Everyone wants to look their best on their wedding day, whatever one’s “best” may be. With this in mind, after announcing her engagement on Twitter, Cassie Young was approached by a personal trainer who offered to help her “look her best” for her wedding, by helping her lose weight. The issue with this is that Young already feels she is currently at her best.
Rather than saying, “okay, congrats, and have a good day,” the personal trainer tried to convince Young that yes, she can accept her image, but she “can’t be happy with they way [she] looks,” as he put it.
Appalled that someone could so densely think that a woman cannot be truly happy with her figure if she’s not a certain weight, Young responded and was not afraid to put the trainer in his place.
Yes, she’s clapping back and we’re clapping for her.
Young posted her Twitter conversation with the trainer on Facebook. In doing so, she wants to show people that there is no such thing as a universal “best” way to look. She wrote in her post,
Young also tried to get the trainer to understand her point by explaining that it’s taken her a long time to love the way she looks, especially after battling those who said she was less than. She is not aiming to be remembered centuries to come for the “fact that [she has] a tummy,” but for the fact that she lived her life to the fullest.
Unfortunately, the trainer wasn’t getting it.
Like Young said to him via Twitter DM, it is so sad that his self-worth is wrapped up in appearances. Unlike him, Young is not defined by other people’s opinions.
The trainer finally gave up, not learning much from the interaction. However, Young’s conversation proves an important point: We still have a ways to go before it’s universally understood that just because someone doesn’t fit into a societal norm, that doesn’t mean they are not worthy of the same love as those who do. Hopefully, as long as we have people like Young leading the charge, we’ll get there eventually.
Congratulations to Young on her engagement. We can’t wait to see her beautiful self in those wedding photos!
