We know it’s been a problem for our country for quite some time now, but Stephen Hawking wants to remind us just how much obesity is affecting the health of American citizens. He’s featured in a 60-second video released by GEN-PEP, a Swedish non-profit, and he insists that obesity is “one of the most serious public health problems of the 21st century.”

Hawking says there are far too many people who are dying from complications related to obesity — and he’s right. One out of every five deaths in America is related to obesity, and it’s the second leading cause of preventable death in the U.S. (only second to tobacco use). According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than a third of Americans are obese, putting them at a high risk for heart disease, many types of cancer, stroke, and Type 2 diabetes. It’s a frightening issue that needs to be addressed more boldly if we have any chance of saving the lives of fellow Americans.

That’s exactly why Hawking is speaking up about the obesity epidemic in our country. He makes it very clear that its in our power to make a change.

If you have any questions about your own health, talk to your doctor about how you can turn things around, and if anyone you love is struggling with their health, urge them to see a medical provider as well.
