First of all, we have to give a huge shout-out to Life Hacker because we would’ve never even thought about twice about this!

While keeping your *special* coffee mug at the office seems like a good idea, it can actually be really harmful to your health!

OMG WHAT?!!

We all know that being in a community environment, especially one in which you spend 40+ hours with people every week, can be a breeding ground for bacteria and germs. But just being around people all the time isn’t the only explanation as to WHY so much bacteria can exist on your personal items.

Gerba suggests that the way office cleaning methods are practiced are most likely the blame. If you think about it, communal sponges and brushes that are used to clean dishes are not changed very often, and also, who knows what’s touched those sponges?! Those things are loaded with all different types of germs and bacteria that are basically just getting redistributed on everything they’ve touched.

According to Gerba, it’s as simple as taking your mug home as often as possible (read: probably every day) and running it through the dishwasher, since the high heat from the dry cycle will kill the bacteria. And if you’re unable to do that (or you forget), washing your mug at the office with hot water, soap, and drying it with a clean paper towel will do the trick.
