You may consider yourself a hardcore Harry Potter fan, but do you know the origins behind some of the more obscure character and location names?

It’s a well-known fact that J.K. Rowling is something of a word hound, carefully selecting names for characters and places in the Harry Potter universe that have more than one meaning. Most fans know about Voldemort and the French origins of his name (vol de mort = flight from death), but did you know that right in the middle of the name for the wizarding bank, Gringotts, is the word “ingot,” which is a unit of gold or that the crotchety caretaker, Argus Filch, gets his first name from a Greek monster with a hundred ever-watchful eyes?
