How Harry Potter is bringing magic to sick kids in Egypt
Mark your calendars, because August 29th is a big day. On August 29th, the hashtag movement #HalfBloodSphinx is going to be used to raise awareness about the day-long Harry Potter festival called “The Harry Potter Experience” in Cairo, Egypt. And this isn’t just ANY Harry Potter festival —this particular HP celebration is helping sick children in Egypt. All proceeds from the event will go towards Abo El-Reesh children’s hospital. Since it might be too far for us to travel by broom, we might have to apparate to this event.
Sponsored and organized by a group of medical students from Cairo University, and calling themselves Patient Support Team (PST), they aim to create fun events and initiatives to raise money Abo El-Reesh children’s hospital. All funds collected will go towards “providing resources and support for public and university hospitals – many of which rely on medical students – allowing them to provide better service for poorer patients.” Donors can also opt to “adopt” a specific cause, so they know exactly what treatment/research their money is going to towards.
According to the Facebook page for the event, it’s open to all “wizards (and a few muggles and squibs) everywhere.” The events of the day will include a Quidditch game, Sorting Hat festivities, and dueling competitions. They’ll also be plenty of Harry Potter themed snacks to keep everyone happy during the day, along with merchandise to buy, and on top of all of this, a costume contest, too (so expect some PRIZES). Throughout the day attendees can vote on their favorite HP movie, and it’ll be screened that night.
To attend the event, you do need to “apply” for a spot. But if you are accepted, you get a wax sealed acceptance letter, just like Harry did when he learned he was accepted into Hogwarts! And while you’re obsessing over all the tiny HP details put into this event, know that all the money raised is going towards helping sick kids. Now that’s a great kind of magic.
