Happy Play Tennis Day!
February 23rd is Play Tennis Day!
Tennis is a fantastic sport. I might be a little biased, though. I grew up loving tennis because my dad loves tennis. I played tennis in high school, under my dad as coach. And then after graduating, I started giving private lessons. Whenever there is a tournament going on, from Wimbledon to the BNP Paribas Open, you can bet my dad will keep me up to date with my favorite tennis stars stats. This past summer, I was lucky enough to be in London traveling with my brother during the Wimbledon Championships. We both got a grounds pass, and it all felt so surreal. So you see, I love tennis.
Going to a tennis match is a unique viewing experience. I remember my first match, thinking how weird it was that everyone was so quiet, and sitting so properly. A huge contrast from your typical NFL crowd. (Maybe that’s part of why I like it so much?)
Don’t let the tranquil environment at a tennis match deceive you, though. This sport is full of drama. Professional tennis players tend to be divas, and they can put on a good show. Not to mention they are such fit athletes, so when they get riled up, it is pretty scary. I don’t think I need to explain myself when I say don’t mess with Serena Williams. Now there’s a force to be reckoned with. Her presence on the court is undeniably terrifying.
Another great thing about the sport of tennis: it is a game that you can play with almost any skill level. You don’t need to be an expert to have fun and hit the ball back and forth. Granted, you do need to be able to hit the ball over the net, at the least, but most people can pick that up quickly. Tennis is a really great workout, because whether you play singles or doubles, you are guaranteed action (as opposed to baseball and other team sports).
How to Celebrate
If the weather is good, get out your racquet and a couple of tennis balls, find a buddy, and hit the ball around! And if the weather isn’t so good and you are lucky enough to have the right facilities, and indoor match is also a blast. Have fun enjoying the sport of tennis, which has been played in the U.S. since 1874!
Quote of the Day
“Tennis is a perfect combination of violent action taking place in an atmosphere of total tranquility.” – Billie Jean King
