February 14th is National Organ Donor Day!

Why Celebrate?

My first thought when I found out that today is National Organ Donor Day was “how appropriate”. And somewhat morbidly symbolic (though I’ll try not to be too much of a cynic on this day of “Be Mine”s and everything lovey-dovey). At its core, today’s more well known holiday, Valentine’s Day, is all about love. Giving love, spreading love, sharing love. Surrendering your heart to passion and adoration. Selfless acts of love. Now think about it… this is pretty much exactly like organ donation.

Organ donation is really an incredible gift of love. Did you know that one donated organ can save up to eight lives? How beautiful is that?! Each day, an average of 79 people receive organ transplants. The facts are astounding. And sadly, an average of 18 people die every day because they needed an organ, but there was nothing available for them. Right now, as I type this, 121,205 people are waiting for an organ.

How to Celebrate

Learn about how to become an organ donor. It is such a beautiful gift, and if you haven’t thought about it, consider the option. Check out the information online, or even register today!

Quotes of the Day

“We cannot live only for ourselves. A thousand fibers connect us with our fellow men.” – Herman Melville

“Don’t think of organ donations as giving up part of yourself to keep a total stranger alive. It’s really a total stranger giving up almost all of themselves to keep part of you alive.” – Author Unknown
