It’s practically a law of nature that your phone will always run out of storage at the most inopportune times. For instance, at 2 a.m., when your friend Julie is doing something ridiculous that requires photographic proof, or when you’re traveling in Italy and you’ve just driven past the Colosseum for the first time. Then, in a frenzy, you start irrationally deleting photo after photo, and it’s not until two weeks later that you realize you actually deleted every single shot from your little cousin’s birthday party. Oops.

But all hope is not lost: Here’s a super-easy phone hack that will prevent those panicked photo deleting sessions for good. If you’re not using an ancient device, the operating system on your iPhone probably has the ability to optimize storage space. This means your phone will keep low-res versions of pics on your phone, sending the beautiful high-res versions to the cloud.

The best part? It’s insanely easy to set up: Just go into Settings, select Photos & Camera, and then choose Optimize. That’s it! You’re done! Now go forth to document your crazy nights out and amazing vacations! You can thank us later.
