Fact: It’s possible to challenge gender norms and totally nail a joke at the same time. Actually, the two interplay quite well together. Sometimes when you want to get across a point, or say, challenge patriarchy, a little wit goes a long way. Just refer to these fantastic quotes for proof:

1. “The truth will set you free, but first it will piss you off.” – Gloria Steinem

2. “Of course I am not worried about intimidating men. The type of man who will be intimidated by me is exactly the type of man I have no interest in.” – Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

3. “I’m a feminist. I’ve been a female for a long time now. It’d be stupid not to be on my own side.” – Maya Angelou

4. “I myself have never been able to find out precisely what feminism is: I only know that people call me a feminist whenever I express sentiments that differentiate me from a doormat.” – Rebecca West, 20th century British journalist

5. “Obviously, as an adult I realize this girl-on-girl sabotage is the third worst kind of female behavior, right behind saying ‘like’ all the time and leaving your baby in a dumpster.” – Tina Fey

6. “When a man gives his opinion, he’s a man. When a woman gives her opinion, she’s a bitch.” – Bette Davis

7. “Last time I checked, how much sex a girl has doesn’t justify a label slapped on her like a soup can.” – Meggie Royer, poet

8. “A man told me that for a woman, I was very opinionated. I said, ‘For a man, you’re kind of ignorant.'” – Anne Hathaway

9. “A woman is like a tea bag. You never know how strong she is until she gets in hot water.” – Eleanor Roosevelt

10. “Do you really believe. . . that everything historians tell us about men – or about women – is actually true? You ought to consider the fact that these historians have been written by men, who never tell the truth except by accident..” – Moderata Fonte, sixteenth-century Venetian writer & poet

11. “Whatever you choose, however many roads you travel, I hope that you choose not to be a lady. I hope you will find some way to break the rules and make a little trouble out there. And I also hope that you will choose to make some of that trouble on behalf of women.” – Nora Ephron

12. “The only jobs for which no man is qualified are human incubators and wet nurse. Likewise, the only job for which no woman is or can be qualified is sperm donor.” – Wilma Scott Heide, feminist author

13. “I’m no lady: I’m a member of Congress, and I’ll proceed on that basis.” – Mary Norton, the first female Democratic member of Congress

14. “I have a brain and a uterus, and I use both.” – Patricia Schroeder, Colorado’s first female member of Congress

15. That’s like someone being like, ‘I don’t really believe in cars, but I drive one every day and I love that it gets me places and makes life so much easier and faster and I don’t know what I would do without it.” – Amy Poehler on women who renounce feminism
