Thinking about your next tattoo? Maybe you should learn a little bit about AstroFrecks. AstroFrecks are a tattoo trend for astrology lovers, and while they might seem a bit extreme, keep in mind that they’re only semi-permanent.

Created by Jessica Knapik, a cosmetic tattoo artist of the Michigan-based shop Depot Town Tattoo, the art focuses around freckles. Knapik makes a point in hiding star designs in what look to be natural freckles, meaning that they’re a creative way to pay tribute to natural beauty.

Freckles are currently “in” — but honestly, they’ve always been special. Natural freckles are spots that appear due to sun exposure. According to Healthline, they start appearing due to an overproduction of melanin. While a lot of people have them due to their own environment (as well as genetics) others wish theirs were a little more prominent. Which is why practices like AstroFrecks are making the news. Knapik uses a technique that has the freckles fade a bit over time, which adds to their natural appearance.

With AstroFrecks, those who get them done can honor a family member, or even themselves. While they’re similar to tattoos that represent a birthday, they’re often seen as a tribute that isn’t quite so obvious.

Here’s just a few examples of Knapik’s typical freckle-work.

And here’s how she maps out the AstroFrecks.

Pretty cool, right?

According to an interview that Knapik did with Bustle, AstroFrecks are still pretty new — in fact, she’s only worked on one client so far, but it’s made people talk.

We think these semi-permanent tattoos will totally take off, and think that Knapik may have started the next big trend.
