Too often I’m impressed by festive Halloween treats on Pinterest—all those fake blood and morbid body part cupcakes—but after a repin, the very ideas that I react with: What? How’d they do that? Whoa, brilliant, remains on an unmarked board, resting in peace, never to come to life (not even The Walking Dead style). Why? Because fondant never tastes as enticing as it looks.
So when I thought about making Halloween drinks for a party, I wanted to use ingredients that I’d actually enjoy eating, not just because it looks like blood or bones. How about a Halloween recipe with lychees? I could eat lychees all day. And involves a homemade Shirley Temple? That means a bottle full of excess Grenadine and a whole jar of maraschino cherries (without the bartender’s judgement). Now this is a novelty treat I could get behind. I was glad to see its viability when others like Martha Stewart and Happiness Is Homemade have done it before, but visualizing adorable Shirley Temple (with multiple pairs of eyes) in your mason jar makes this that much more deliciously horrific.
Shirley Temple’s Eyeball Drinks
- 6 lychees from a can, drained
- 3 black grapes, halved
- 6 fluid ounces lemon-lime flavored carbonated beverage (7 Up or Sprite)
- 1 splash of grenadine syrup (or more!)
- 1 maraschino cherry (or more!)
- Carefully slip grape halves into the cavity of lychees, so the the cut side of the grape sticks out.
- Place lychee eyeballs on a plate or tray and freeze for at least 1 hour.
- In a mason jar pour carbonated beverage and grenadine syrup. Drop cherries and eyeballs in the drink when ready to serve.
