It’s officially okay for moms-to-be to drink this drink

This is amazing news for tired, pregnant women who are exhausted by the changes in their body and just need a pick-me-up: coffee, in moderate amounts, is officially okay. Cue the stampede of expecting mothers running to Starbucks. But if you still don’t believe me, let science explain.

On Thursday, a study published in the American Journal of Epidemiology revealed that pregnant women ingesting caffeine, whether that’s drinking it or eating it, isn’t going to hurt the IQ of their baby at any point in the future. This study is super helpful, because moms-to-be come across a huge amount of conflicting and scary information when they’re preparing for this life event. Some places tell them to avoid caffeine at all costs, but this is actually a myth.

However, don’t go guzzling all the Peppermint Mochas you can get your hands on. It’s still possible for pregnant women to ingest too much, so the study determined a universal safe amount that those with a bun in the oven should stick to. 200 milligrams (mg) or about two or three cups of instant coffee per day is your safest bet, which, to be honest, is pretty normal. You can make yourself coffee in the morning, and still indulge in that two PM energy boost when your day at the office starts to lag.

As with most things, it’s important to talk to your doctor before making any drastic changes. One study can’t account for your specific needs and health, so while this is definitely good news, give your doctor a ring. Only they know what’s best for your body and, hopefully, that’s a caramel latte.
