In-N-Out Burger has expanded its famously limited menu for the first time in 15 years, and its new menu item is — drum roll please — hot cocoa. Fans of hot chocolate drinks will be happy, but we can’t say we weren’t a little dismayed to learn that the new menu item wasn’t a veggie patty, bacon burger, onion rings, a gluten-free bun, curly fries, or a hot dog. We expected anything but an expansion to the drink menu.

An In-N-Out employee told The Daily Bulletin that the beverage is made with Ghiradelli cocoa and hot water (not milk) and is topped with mini marshmallows. The eight-ounce drink is priced at $1.60.

“This is actually the return of hot cocoa,” Company president Lynsi Snyder said in a statement. “My grandparents, Harry and Esther Snyder, served it for many years beginning in the ‘50s.  I’m not sure how it fell off the menu but it’s part of our culture and something special for kids, and I’m happy that we’re bringing it back.”

The last time the company expanded its menu was 15 years ago, when it added lemonade to the drink list.

Back in November, the company announced that it was expanding to Colorado but said that the 50 planned restaurants wouldn’t materialize for another three years.

Considering the leisurely pace at which In-N-Out grows its company, we might get a veggie patty in about 10 years’ time.

Fun fact: Eater San Francisco reports that kids under 12 will receive a free cup of cocoa on rainy days.

If you’re an In-N-Out purist, then carry-on, but if you pine for an expanded menu that might never come, we suggest checking out the ~secret menu~.
