As a Michelin star-winning chef, restaurant owner, and judge on cooking shows like Hell’s Kitchen and MasterChef, it’s probably safe to assume that Gordon Ramsay knows his way around the kitchen. And when he isn’t dishing out hilarious food reviews on Twitter, he’s dropping real knowledge. Today, Gordon Ramsay shared his three golden rules for dining out, and we’re all ears.
Because we’re sure if anyone knows how to get the best out of a dining experience, it would be Gordon Ramsay — and not just because of his fiery TV temper.
According to the Daily Mail, Ramsay strongly stands by these three golden rules when it comes to eating out:
1. Avoid the specials!
Ramsay says, “Specials are there to disappear throughout the evening. When they list 10 specials, that’s not special.”
2. Be suspicious of exaggerated titles.
“When they turn around and tell me it is the ‘famous red lasagne,’ who made it famous?” he demands.
Gordon said these titles are usually based on little more than a handful of opinions, and should be avoided. Unless you just reeeeally want some red lasagne.
3. Don’t be afraid to haggle for the wine!
He suggests skipping the sommelier recommendations and asking for the “bin end” list instead. These are the bottles of wine with scratched labels, vintages that are about to be rotated out or poor sellers that restaurants want to get rid of — so, you’ll end up getting a better deal.
“We have a fear about talking to sommeliers because you think you’re going to be ripped off,” he says. “So get the sommelier to come up with a great glass or great bottle and give him a price. And make sure it’s under $30.”
Ramsay also recommends booking a table for at least three if you are planning a romantic meal for two. He says this will improve your chances of being able to spread out and avoid “getting stuck in the corner like a doorstop.”
