In the days since the tragic shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, surviving students have made headlines as they fight for gun control — particularly Emma Gonzalez, the student who made a compelling, now-viral speech at an anti-gun rally. Before the shooting took place, though, she decided to cut off all her hair. And Gonzalez recently revealed on Instagram why she shaved her head, and the reason behind her decision is actually much simpler than you may think.

Gonzalez told the Sun Sentinel that while people have been wondering if it was a decision tied to feminism or a political statement, that’s not really what she was thinking about when she said goodbye to her long locks. Instead, it was more about being practical (and staying cool) in the Florida sun, and she even called her hair “an extra sweater I’m forced to wear,” a straight real statement for anyone who has had long hair in the summer months.

Last month, when she was featured by the Humans Of Stoneman Douglas Instagram account, she laid it all out there. She said:

Can you blame her?

Those Florida temperatures get really high all year round, and they’re even worse in the summer. Who wants to be messing with long hair in the middle of all that? And besides, now that Gonzalez is helping lead a revolution, it’s not like she’s got too much free time to worry about what her hair is doing. Honestly, do any of us?

Regardless of Gonzalez’s reasons, she looks amazing with her buzz cut — and it’s awesome to hear how happy she is with the way she looks. Knowing her, that PowerPoint must have been clear, convincing, and powerful.
