Have you ever thought to yourself, “Wow, my dog looks just like Mark Twain?” No? Well, Dan Bannino has. Over at Bored Panda, Bannino, an Italy-based photographer and self-proclaimed dog lover, uploaded some pretty amazing photos he took of shelter dogs who look strikingly similar to famous writers. He was inspired to create the series “Poetic Dogs,” by his own rescue dog, Rothko. Bannino wrote about how adopting Rothko changed his perspective on dogs, and ultimately led to him beginning this photo project:

“Living with Rothko I’ve learned how to understand his moves and I’ve to learned to listen to his silent words and for this reason I’ve realized how dogs are similar to writers: speaking through their expressions, sounds and movements, they’re telling you everything while saying nothing, just like an author would do with their words in a fine poem.”

As a writer (not of fine poetry) and mom to a rescue dog, I never thought of dogs and writers in this way but now that I have it makes total sense and I kinda dig it.

All of the featured dogs in “Poetic Dogs” are from the same shelter as Rothko. Take a look at the pretty uncanny photographs and feel a literary canine kinship like never before.
