Anyone who’s watched I Love Lucy for even a few minutes knows that iconic word that’s shouted by Ricky Ricardo over and over throughout the show: “Luuucccyyyyyy!” Their relationship was as real off-screen as it was on, as Desi Arnaz, the actor who played Ricky Ricardo, was married to Lucille Ball in real life in the 40s and 50s. However, their marriage was rocky, and ultimately, they were divorced in 1960 (breaking America’s collective heart) and married other people later on.

When you think about what an ex-husband would have to say about an ex-wife, or vice versa, you don’t expect any particularly pleasant or heartwarming comments. However, the two continued to speak highly of each other until their deaths, and right now, we’re teary over the words he said about Lucille shortly before his death, as revealed by the book Desilu: The Story of Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz.

Are you ready? Do you have some tissues handy? Because this is getting us right in the feels:

It’s equal parts heartbreaking and touching to know that a broken relationship could still have so much love there even after decades apart. But that’s not all. According to House Beautiful, the authors of Desilu revealed that the daughter of Lucille and Desi, named Lucie, knew the last words Desi said to Lucille before his death: “I love you too, honey. Good luck with your show.”

Sometimes, though conditions can keep two people from being together, the love still burns on. And it’s obvious that it did for Lucy and Desi until the day they left this world — perhaps even beyond. Consider our hearts officially shattered. Now we’re even more excited for the Lucille Ball biopic that was announced a few months ago — but if Desi utters those words, we might just dissolve into a puddle of tears.
