The full moon is a special time. Our inner flames are lit bright and we get to shine from the inside out, much like the moon herself. The full moon is when the moon and her energy are at an apex, when we have the chance to harness this energy for ourselves in whatever way we see fit. This weekend, December’s Full Cold Moon on December 3rd will shine, illuminating our desires for the rest of 2017 as well as the year ahead. Since it’s a supermoon, which is when the moon is closest to the earth and when it’s full or new, everything will be shining just a bit brighter.

We also have the Winter Solstice in a few week’s time, marking the beginning of a new season, the descent into winter, and the longest night of the year. In other words, things are about to get real. But don’t worry — it’s not as scary as it sounds. To ease your mind, here’s everything you need to know about this full moon and how to celebrate it.

December’s Full Cold Moon gets its name from the fact that it’s associated with the month of cold, of darkness, of long nights and short days. It’s also called the Long Nights Moon by some Native Americans because of its association with the Winter Solstice.

The sun is currently in Sagittarius, the sign of the archer, and a fire sign known for its vibrant, progressive, forward-thinking energy that’s expansive much like the bow and arrow the archer holds. This is paired with the moon being in air sign Gemini, the twins, which is the communicator of the zodiac. Gemini are dreamers and visionaries who are multifaceted, always thinking about what’s next.

Let this full moon highlight your brightest and boldest visions. We already have our eyes set for the new year, and you’re allowed to as well. Use the kinetic energy of Sagittarius to shine a light on your ideas, and use the communicative energy of Gemini to weave these into reality. Let the air and fire of these signs spark something in you, and follow them wherever they lead. Gemini also reminds you of your dualistic nature, encouraging you to merge different aspects of yourself to be as whole as possible in everything you do.

Astrology.com further explains the energy of this full moon, stating,

The full moon is a good time for manifesting, for energy work, for meditation, for reflection, and for focusing on what serves us. Since this is the first and last supermoon of 2017, we have an extra special mix of energy to work with. The moon appears closer and brighter during a supermoon, so our depths, our passions, and our goals have an extra spark of energy stimulating them.

Buy a new planner, and cleanse it with sage or palo santo, dedicating it to your intention. You can also work with citrine, a stone that helps bring in warmth, passion, clarity, abundance, and wealth (while helping you hold onto said abundance). This is perfect for Gemini energy. Take a bath, write a poem to the moon or yourself, practice yoga, or simply lay under the moon’s rays (aka a moon bath). Taking time to honor how much you’ve accomplished can also be a ritual in itself. Grab your loved ones and hold space for one another, making a list of everything you’ve accomplished since the beginning of 2017. Read these aloud to each other, tapping into the airy magick of Gemini while you do so.

The full moon is putting a spotlight on your desires and all the baggage you don’t need to continue carrying. If there’s anything you feel like you need to release before the new year, now is the time to do so. As the moon’s light wanes, or shrinks, up until the New Moon on December 18th, you have a window of time to shed the skins that feel too tight. You can also make a list of what you want to let go of on the full moon, and burn it on the New Moon. Astrology.com highlights this idea of letting go, explaining,

No matter how you celebrate, we hope your passions light up your work, your life, and the rest of your year.
