Watch this badass 78-year-old grandmother deadlift 225 pounds
Shirley Webb may be almost 80-years-old, but that’s not stopping her from totally kicking ass at the gym. And now, an Instagram video of this grandmother deadlifting 225 pounds is going totally viral.
Just two years ago, Shirley had problems getting up off the floor or climbing stairs, and the only form of exercise she got was mowing the lawn, she explained to ESPN. However, all of that changed when her granddaughter encouraged her to start going with her to Club Fitness in Wood River, Illinois.
It took Shirley, who will be turning 79 in August, just six months of hard training to be able to deadlift in the 200-pound range, according to her trainer, John Wright. “She’s gotten to the point where everybody greets her and is just absolutely impressed,” John, who has never trained someone Shirley’s age in this kind of weightlifting before, told ESPN. “She inspires everybody that goes to the gym and it’s fun to see that.”
Shirley, who lives close to the border of Illinois and Missouri in East Alton, now goes to the gym twice a week and has set records in age and weight groups in both Illinois and Missouri in at 237 and 215 pounds, respectively. But she has set higher goals for herself. “I have no intention of stopping right now,” Shirley told ESPN. “When I go to the gym and work out, when I leave, I feel so much better than I did when I went in, and I just feel so good. I feel tremendous.”
There’s currently no national record for weightlifting in Shirley’s age group, and in June, she hopes to set one — and we have full faith she will. Check out the visual proof of Shirley’s badassery below!
