Have you heard Chris Cornell singing "Nothing Compares 2 U"? 'Cause it's gorgeous
We love it when a song’s so beautiful that it’s hypnotizing – and Chris Cornell’s latest cover is no exception.
The rock musician recently covered Prince’s “Nothing Compares 2 U” for SiriusXM. While he was only backed by two people – cellist Bryan Gibson and accompanying guitarist Keaton Simons – it definitely did not feel that way. Throughout the entire number, the three men worked together so spectacularly that they ended up producing a song that’s downright magical.
With Cornell’s rustic vocals, the lyrics feel authentic and raw. When he sings, “I go out every night and sleep all day, since you took your love away,” it feels as though he’s telling a story. Although, it does not feel like a sad story about lost love. Instead, it comes off as a stripped-down narrative about what happens when a relationship unexpectedly ends.
What we love most is that Cornell adds a bit of his rock background to the mix. In between his more soulful crooning, you’ll feel as though you’re in the midst of a rock concert. All of the sudden, the band decided to surprise the audience with a tearjerking number – just to mix things up a bit – and you’re overcome with emotion. That’s exactly what this cover feels like, proving that Chris Cornell has a way with lyrical words.
The lead vocalist also pays homage to Sinéad O’Connor’s version of the song, which is equally remarkable and memorable. If you watch her cover right after Cornell’s, you’ll notice a similar pacing. But overall, each artist adds something extra special to this Prince melody.
If you’re as captivated as we are and want to hear more of Cornell’s spellbinding vocals, he just released a new album called Higher Truth. Oh! And he’s also on tour, just in case you want to see him live (we know we do!).
Now we don’t know about you, but we definitely joined in and added our own applause at the end of the video!
