You know the man behind hit films like Moulin Rouge, Romeo + Juliette, and The Great Gatsby? Yes, I’m talking about the writer/creator/director/genius Baz Luhrmann. If you love his style as much as I do, you’re going to be super excited about his latest project, Netflix’s The Get Down. Set in the Bronx, the series focuses on hip-hop’s origins and follows a group of rag tag teens in the late ’70s. The show will be musically driven, which is what Luhrmann does best.
Many stars of the show are newcomers — Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Herizen Guardiola, Mamoudou Athie, Justice Smith (Papertowns), Skylan Brooks (Southpaw), and Tremaine Brown Jr. But The Get Down will also feature some big name actors, like Giancarlo Esposito (Breaking Bad, Revolution, Once Upon a Time), Shameik Moore (Dope), and Jimmy Smits (Star Wars: Episodes II-III, Sons of Anarchy, Dexter). Jaden Smith will also be making an appearance in a few episodes.
In a Netflix press release, Luhrmann gives some details on what to expect from the main characters.
Netflix describes the show as “a mythic saga of how New York at the brink of bankruptcy gave birth to hip-hop, punk and disco – told through the lives and music of the South Bronx kids who changed the city, and the world…forever.” I mean, how could you not want to watch that? If you need more convincing, check out the just-released trailer which shows awesome costuming, killer dance moves, and lots of disco balls.
Can I go ahead and preorder the soundtrack? Netflix is on fire right now, and with Baz Luhrmann behind the wheel, this show has a lot of promise. No news as to when in 2016 it will premiere, but I’m already planning to binge-watch it.
