Cosmic survival guide: We spoke to astrologer Amelia Quint about enduring eclipse season
Whether you’re well-versed in the language of Astrology, or are just learning about the ancient art, you’ve probably been hearing about “eclipse season” for the past week or two. And although this seems like a new age buzz term, it is actually an accurate description of our current astrological state — and yes, it’s exactly what it sounds like.
We got the low-down on what eclipse season is, what it means, and how we can use it to our advantage from astrologer extraordinaire Amelia Quint. Besides running her own platform, The Midheaven, Amelia also writes horoscopes for Rookie, MyDomaine, and The Coveteur (so it’s safe to say she knows astrology).
Read on to see how you can benefit from the potent energetic portal known as eclipse season.
“'Eclipse season' is a phrase astrologers and horoscope lovers use to describe the times of year when eclipses usually occur. There are typically two 'eclipse seasons' per year, one in the spring and one in the fall. We’ll have 2-3 eclipses, over the course of a month or so. Because of the moon’s natural cycle, there’s typically one solar eclipse and one lunar eclipse, but there’s no hard and fast rule. It’s different every year," explains Amelia.
We are currently smack dab in the middle of eclipse season, thanks to the Full Moon Lunar Eclipse that happened on February 10th, which will be followed by the New Moon Solar Eclipse on February 26th. A lunar eclipse occurs when Earth’s shadow blocks the Sun’s light, while a solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between Earth and the Sun, blocking the Sun’s light. Every month, we experience the ups and downs that come with the Moons 28-day cycle — think about the tides or your period — and eclipses are like a giant magnifying glass for this energy.
"Solar eclipses occur when the moon is new and are excellent for starting something new that you really want to succeed. On the other hand, lunar eclipses happen when the moon is full and act as spotlights for big achievements or important messages," explains Amelia.
So what does this mean for you? Quite literally, that things are going to change. Whether it’s an unexpected opportunity, a new adventure, or a sudden ending (aka something getting “eclipsed” out of your life), this season is all about transformation. And how you navigate this change can depend on where the eclipse is in your personal birth chart, which you can calculate here.
"Your astrology chart will look like a circle divided into 12 parts. Those parts are called “houses.” Each of the twelve houses corresponds to a different part of your life, like love or career. When you figure out what house the eclipse is spotlighting in your chart, you’ll know where you can expect changes and be ready when they happen. Another thing you can do is to make your own eclipse ritual. It doesn’t have to be something big! Sitting under the stars, lighting a candle, making a wish, or putting your favorite crystals outside to soak up the eclipse vibes are all simple and easy ways to celebrate," says Amelia.
Eclipses are major energetic milestones for us, and if we work with their energy instead of against it, they can really help guide us in our own personal growth. Amelia says you’ll be able to feel the energy of the eclipses for a week leading up to the season, as well as for the following month. Mark the days of the eclipses on your calendar, note who you meet or any special interactions you have, how you feel, and what happens.
"Chances are, if it happens under an eclipse, it's going to be big," Amelia says
