Abby Wambach is a soccer legend. She led team USA to World Cup victory last summer, she has played in the Olympics (and won!) and she is the top scorer in international soccer history. Whew. Wambach recently retired from the game, but her legacy ain’t going nowhere. She is also the proud new inspiration for the Abby Wambach Barbie doll, and real-life Abby’s response to the honor is pretty amazing.

At the 2016 Maker’s Conference, where the Barbie was revealed, Abby spoke briefly to the audience about how significant this Barbie is, particularly coming on the heels of the Barbies released with diverse body types. Abby mentioned how she, and so many other girls, grew up playing with dolls that they didn’t relate to.

“You guys may not believe this but I was a Barbie kid, like for real. I’m not just saying that,” Wambach said. “I think this is a really impactful statement…It just proves that we really are getting somewhere. Not everybody is created equal and if you’re out there and maybe your doll doesn’t look exactly like you feel, here’s another option.”

Oh Barbie, thank you for now making dolls that inspire so many different types of girls. And Abby, thanks for being you.
