Okay, folks, we’re almost there. So far, we’ve mostly survived eclipse season, not to mention Mercury Retrograde, not to mention life. It can feel hard to exist when energy is high and the political climate is tense, and that’s totally fair. The total solar eclipse takes place on the new moon on August 21st, and like any eclipse, it marks an energetic gateway to some major change.
Eclipses are not the time for magical working, since the energy is chaotic, but they are the time for releasing, surrendering, and giving ourselves the space we need to embrace the changes ahead. For that reason, we offer you an eclipse candle blessing to help guide you through transitional periods with ease.
The best day to do this is on the eclipse, but you can do this three days before or after the eclipse, or whenever you need a cosmic pick-me-up.
You’ll need: a white taper candle, palo santo or sage, a lighter or match, a space where you can be alone, a needle or pin, a plate, and sea salt. Additional items: clear quartz, amethyst, lavender, oil (like lavender), and peppermint or eucalyptus.
1Take time to ground.
Turn your phone off, let your roommates know not to disturb you, dim the lights, and find a comfortable seat. Start by taking a few deep breaths, inhaling and exhaling for a count of four. Do this a handful of times until you start to feel your body melt a little bit. Then, imagine the base of your spine is actually the roots of a tree. Imagine these growing deeply into the core of the earth, connecting to her energy. This energy moves up your spine and out the top of your head like branches that cascade to the cosmos and then back down toward the earth. Imagine this like a circuit of energy, up your spine, out the crown of your head, back down to the earth, and then starting again. Stay here for as long as you need.
2Cleanse your space.
Cleanse your space by burning palo santo or sage (or cobalt), or by spraying sage spray. Walk around the space imagining any negative energy dissipating and moving to the light. If you work with specific deities, spirit guides, angels, or ascended masters, you can ask them to help cleanse the space of anything that’s not serving your highest purpose or working in your highest favor. Take your time with this, getting the corners of the room. You can also cleanse all the tools you’ll need for the blessing as well.
3Set it up.
For this part of the blessing, you have a couple of options.
You can simply set you your candle up by burning the bottom a bit (so it will stick) and setting it in the middle of the plate.
Or, if you’ve practiced spellwork before and want to work with some candle magick, you can dress your candle. Using a pin or needle, you can write a word, sentence, or phrase that represents your desired outcome onto the candle from the wick to the bottom. It can be as simple as “ease,” or as long as “I surrender to the path that’s working in my highest favor.” If there’s a specific block you’re trying to release this eclipse, you can write that, too, but make sure to write the statement in present tense. If you are working with oil, you can anoint your candle. Put a bit of oil on your hands, rubbing it on the candle from the middle to the bottom, and then from the middle to the wick. You can also add herbs like lavender (for healing) atop the oil. Then burn the bottom of the candle and stick it in the middle of your plate.
4Bless it up.
Take your salt and form a ring around your candle with it. Salt helps to cleanse and absorb negative energy, and it represents a ring of protection around you (as represented by the candle). If you have crystals, you can place them around the candle or hold them.
Light the candle, and say the following:
5Gaze it out.
Take a moment to soften your gaze and look at the flame of your candle. Take a few deep breaths, and imagine what it feels like to be completely and utterly supported. All your worries are gone, and you exist peacefully and wholly. How does it feel? Does your candle bring anything up? Take notes if it does.
6Let it burn.
If you can, let your candle burn all the way down, making sure it’s in a safe place and container while it does. If you can’t do this all in one night, spread it out over three nights. When you’re done, you can bury or throw out the candle wax at a crossroad or intersection.
7Earth that energy.
Once you feel like the spell is complete, press your forehead into the floor, imagining all the energy from before returning to the core of the earth. Stay here, taking deep breaths, as long as you need.
Once you’re done, eat some food and drink some water. You will get through this eclipse and retrograde alive — we promise! Take a salt bath, watch your favorite show, relax with a book, or hang out with your dog. Eclipses remind us to take care of ourselves and relax. Return to this blessing whenever you need. It is a reminder of your inner strength.
