By now the Apple Watch has gone from an announcement that spurred lots of joke tweets to something that is already available for pre-order. The Apple Watch, which starts shipping out to customers on Friday, has already received 957,000 pre-orders in the U.S. and though I still don’t QUITE understand why I’d need one, I’m still fascinated by the prospect of its existence. I’m glad I’ll be living in a world with it even if I won’t (necessarily) ever own one. (Because as Justin Bieber says “Never say never.”)

But there was a time when the most futuristic watches we had could barely do anything more than tell time. For a walk down memory lane, here were some of our most futuristic watch options from the past:

The Casio Digital Watch

The ’90s felt like a wonderland of weird technology. Maybe it was the fact that I was a child so I was really invested in toys. But it felt like everyone was! Just having a digital watch of any kind was SUPER impressive at one point in time.

This watch seemed like the most technologically-advanced thing you could buy (besides a Talk Boy, of course). It was the pre-cursor for my eventual TI-89 purchase for Math class.

ANY Swatch Watch

My 1st grade teacher had a COLLECTION of Swatch watches and I’ve never been more jealous of a human being in my life. I never owned an actual Swatch watch but I coveted hers so much. I think the mere fact that she wore a different one every day seriously impacted the way I purchase accessories and clothing. (ie I want 10000000000 versions of every single thing I love.)

But even more futuristic than that were the clear Swatches were you could see all the gears moving! HOW COOL IS THAT? ALSO GIVE ME ONE NOW.

Video Game Watches

Sure, I could take my Game Gear on car trips with me OR I could play sweet video games RIGHT FROM MY WRIST.

OK, these games were a worse version of that snake game you got on your first cell phone but it was still SOMETHING. I mean, just look at those graphics you can half-see!

Chatback Watches

And let’s never forget this Burger King promotion with Rugrats with a series of Chatback watches.

Beautiful.
