Lena Waithe wore the pride flag at the 2018 Met Gala, which makes a true fashion statement
Lena Waithe is one to watch in awe (in terms of her interviews, shows, and general wealth of talent), and her look at the 2018 Met Gala is no exception. Wearing the pride flag as a cape, she is the epitome of a fashion statement — especially when you consider the night’s theme: “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination.”

Lena is the first black woman to win an Emmy in the category of writing for a comedy series. In late March, she completely changed the (mostly white) landscape of Vanity Fair covers. Lena, most importantly, is paving the way with her work as a black queer icon in the entertainment industry.
Lena Waithe has a platform and she’s not afraid to use it.
And yes, we are all the better for it.

Though we are certainly gawking at tonight’s looks — the embellishments! headpieces! trains! oh my! — we can’t help but commend Lena Waithe for making a fashion statement of cultural value. As in, Lena used her platform to say something (not just show something). If that doesn’t make her a candidate for best dressed, we don’t know what does.
