Lena Headey just got super real about postpartum depression

No matter how much we think we know someone, or a TV character, there tends to be more to the story. For instance, Lena Headey just got super real about postpartum depression, reported Today. Of course, we’re applauding her big-time. Headey, aka Cersei Lannister, talks about it with fellow Game of Thrones actress Maisie Williams in the latest issue of Net-A-Porter’s weekly digital magazine, The Edit.

When the first season of GoT started filming, Headey had just given birth to her son, Wylie Loughran — who’s now 7, btw! Williams asked Headey what it’s like doing traumatic scenes. And, obvs, Headey had a lot going on in her life off-screen, too.

“Really horrendous – I was postnatally depressed but I didn’t know it, Headey told The Edit. “I saw a doctor for the medical check, and I just burst into tears. She said I was postnatally depressed and I went, ‘Am I? Why is that?’

According to the Mayo Clinic, postpartum depression is a long-lasting form of depression. The condition interferes with caring for your baby and other daily tasks. Symptoms of it include everything from severe mood swings and excessive crying to loss of energy and severe anxiety.

ICYMI, Headey has talked openly about her anxiety and depression before.

Back in April, she took to Twitter to answer a fan’s question about if she ever feels insecure. The answer’s no, but Headey went on to talk about her anxiety.

Okay, as if we need yet another reason to love Headey, we now have one. Time and time again, we love how real she is with us!

And what did Headey do for her postpartum depression?

“I saw a great guy and he sorted me out, but I did the first year [on Game of Thrones] in that space, figuring out motherhood and going through a weird time personally, Headey told The Edit. “It was tricky.

We can imagine, and we’re really glad she sought out help. As you probably know, Season 7 of GoT premieres on July 16th — JUST EIGHT DAYS AWAY!! Of course, we look forward to seeing what Cersei is up to next!
