Lena Dunham just awesomely stood up for Miley Cyrus

To completely paraphrase It’s a Wonderful Life, every time a lady stands up for another lady, an angel gets its wings. Or at least it FEELS like that’s what’s happening, because in this world where women are all too often encouraged to take down other women, watching a girl support another girl is a beautiful thing to behold.

In a must-read interview with Refinery29 published this week, Dunham was asked about the following tweet she had thrown out to the universe in 2014:

When asked to elaborate, Dunham was quick to point out that this statement “only goes so far.”

“It doesn’t go so far as to excuse things that I don’t think work within the historical and political definition of what feminism is. When girls say, ‘Hey, Miley Cyrus’ hot pants are not feminist.’ Maybe they are for her, and maybe they’re not for you. Part of the deal is that she wants to wear hot pants, and you want to wear slacks. The biggest things are when a girl says about another girl, ‘She’s not respecting herself sexually. She’s looking for love in all the wrong places.’ You don’t get to decide that. You don’t get to decide what a feminist looks and acts like.”

We’re completely with  Dunham on this one. The degree to which people are comfortable policing women’s bodies and judging qualities like a woman’s commitment to equal rights based on what she’s wearing is completely ridiculous.

In any event, we love Lena sticking up for Miley. To quote another black-and-white movie, dare we hope this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship?
