The “Lego” movies are pretty much turning into a cinematic universe
Following in the footsteps of 2014’s The Lego Movie and last February’s The Lego Batman Movie, we now have The Lego Ninjago Movie (in theaters today). Right about now, you might be wondering: Is this the beginning of a Lego cinematic universe?
Well, Ninjago producer Chris McKay said YES, this is the start of something HUGE.
"Yes, absolutely," he told HelloGiggles. "That's exactly what everyone's clamoring for is another cinematic universe. So this is the beginning of another one."
Okay, so maybe he’s joking a bit, but McKay did confirm that all these movies (probably) exist within the same universe.
So there’s something!
"What we talk about is maybe they exist on the same block or the same neighborhood or all these kids might know each other somehow," he said. "I think some of that stuff will be revealed as we go on. But that's [what] the idea that we're playing with is...the kid's playing with Ninjago, the kid's playing with Batman, and [there's] Finn who's playing with Emmet and all those other characters."
He added, “They might all know each other and be in the same circle of friends, they go to the same school or their houses are near each other along the same part of the subdivision.”
And since we know that McKay — who directed The Lego Batman movie and serves as an executive producer on The Lego Movie Sequel and The Billion Brick Race — is interested in making all different sorts of Lego movies (like, ehem, Game of Thrones), the universe might expand even more.
McKay went on to address what happens with these toys when the kids are away.
Like, is this a Toy Story situation, in which the toys come to life on their own? Or are they activated by the kids?
“I think it’s these kids’ imaginations and it’s their stories,” McKay said. “It’s the stories that they’re telling each other or telling themselves that are coming to life. It’s not the actual toys coming alive.”
Plus, McKay updated us on The Lego Movie Sequel.
“Lego Movie 2 is going to be a massive musical. It’s going to take place basically after the last movie ended,” McKay explained, adding that it’ll follow the great Duplo wars. “It’s going to be about what happens when two kids [Finn and his sister] and two imaginations try to play together.
They’re different ages, they’re different genders. All the questions that come up, how differently kids can play with each other.”
Expect there to be a bit of a Mad Max vibe to it, and expect the OG voice cast to return — like Will Arnett (Batman), Chris Pratt (Emmet), and Alison Brie (Unikitty). Um, this is awesome.
