A Lego “Game of Thrones” movie COULD happen, but with a lot less incest
The Lego movies continue to spin off into different directions — the most timely example being The Lego Ninjago Movie, which centers on a group of ninjas who must save their home from the threat of an evil warlord. One has to wonder: What other directions could this series take?
According to Ninjago producer Chris McKay, the possibilities are endless.
"I think anything is possible," he told HelloGiggles. "We should be able to do quasi-supernatural horror movies, sorcery, fantasy, Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings-type stuff, space stories...I think the sky's the limit."
For McKay, the open-endedness comes down to Legos as a medium. He explained that Legos are like clay in the films, so even though they’re products outside of the films, there’s a ton of flexibility as far as what you can do with them on-screen.
But, let’s back up for a second: Did he say…a Game of Thrones movie might be possible?
“I would love that,” McKay said. “I would be the first person in line to make that movie and the first person to see that movie, so absolutely. That would be fun.”
Okay, okay, the enthusiasm is there, but is this a real possibility? The short answer is yes, but don’t count on a Lego recreation of #BOATSEX.
"I think you'd have to back off the incest," McKay explained. "We've talked about all sorts of things like this, whether people have actually approached anyone or not, no one that I know of has. But I think these are kinds of internal conversations that we have and we've talked about wanting."
What else is within the realm of possibility?
“Lego has DC and Marvel; they have Marvel characters,” McKay said. “We’ve talked about how we could possibly be the only people that could make a DC and Marvel crossover movie. Is there a way that we can do that? That would be an exciting thing to do.”
Um, we’re ready for the Avengers teaming up with the Justice League. Just sayin’.
And how about, oh, IDK…Star Wars?
“We literally were at Lucasfilm just before they changed hands to Disney when we made that deal to do that,” he detailed, referencing the Star Wars joke made in The Lego Movie. “I hope that that can still happen in the future, but I’m sure it’s going to take a lot more lawyers wrangling this time around.”
Well worth it, in our opinion.
Also on the list of things to explore is Old Hollywood. For example, McKay has an interest in pulling from Alfred Hitchcock movies, or bringing actors of previous generations together with actors of our time — think Jimmy Stewart, Brad Pitt, and George Clooney all in one movie.
"There's all sorts of mashup type stuff you could do...that you couldn't do in another sort of filmmaking," McKay added. "[Those are] the kind of things we want to explore."
Yes please, sign us up! And in the meantime, catch The Lego Ninjago Movie when it lands in theaters on September 22nd.
