What we learned from Mindy Kaling’s rad Reddit AMA
We know it’s a good day when we get any news regarding Mindy Kaling. We’re kind of obsessed with the mastermind behind and star of The Mindy Project, and we hope you’ve been watching the fourth season on Hulu. Mindy also recently released her second book, Why Not Me? Truly, she is such #goals for being an incredible woman and just insanely good at her job. Every day should be National Mindy Kaling Day, as far as we’re concerned.
Yesterday, Mindy somehow became even more amazing by gracing Reddit with an AMA (“Ask Me Anything”) session, where she answered a bunch of questions from fans. The questions ranged from pretty standard to completely out there, which is par for the course for both Reddit and Kaling.
Here are just a few of the best new things we learned about one of our favorite funny gals.
Even she can’t keep it together sometimes
Remember that scene in The Office where Santa Michael had to pretend to be crushed by Kevin’s weight after Kevin sat on his lap? Turns out viewers weren’t the only ones doubling over.
“I think I’m laughing on camera,” Kaling says.
Can The Office just go ahead and have a reunion, please? With Steve Carell, of course. If anyone can make it happen, it’s Mindy Kaling!
She loves The X-Files and Broad City
Kaling says she was “addicted” to The X-Files and can’t wait for the revival, while referring to Gillian Anderson as “G-Money,” as one does.
She would also jump at a chance to work with Abbi and Ilana of Broad City, suggesting that maybe a crossover would have her as their gynecologist whom they found on Groupon. PERFECT.
Her feelings about The Mindy Project moving to Hulu
We all let out a collective scream of joy when we learned Mindy wasn’t over yet and that we’d be able to check out season four on Hulu. But one Reddit user wanted to know how Kaling felt about the move. Turns out she is (and was) super stoked – and therefore, so are we!
“The show on Hulu has let the writers and cast create the best version of it,” she writes candidly. “The creative freedom has allowed us to let moments breathe that we couldn’t before, and tell stories that are closer to what I want to be telling.”
Her Disney Princess alter ego
. . . Or lack thereof. If Kaling were a Disney character, she’d totally be Ursula the Sea Witch and not a princess. We’re dying a little – half from laughter, and half from Kaling be anything but sea-witch-like.
She’s still crying about Bing Bong, just like the rest of us
Kaling, who voices the character Disgust in Pixar’s most recent blockbuster Inside Out, might be someone who’s known for being more prone to laughter than tears. But that doesn’t mean she isn’t human. Case in point: That Bing Bong scene totally ruined her too – and continues to make her cry even though she’s seen the movie four times already.
PETER ISN’T DONE ON THE MINDY PROJECT
Know how Adam Pally – AKA Peter, our most-missed character – made a reappearance on the last episode of Mindy? Good news: He’s not gone for good!
“It’s all me and Peter all the time,” Kaling promises of the next episode. SQUEE!
She’s a gracious and awesome role model for young women
OK, so we already knew this. But when a 19-year-old participant in the AMA session tells Kaling she is one of her biggest role models and asks her advice about how to get through the struggles of being a young adult, Kaling responds in the most honest, sweetest way after thanking her fan.
“I was always comforted by this strange little fire inside of me that when I got older things would not be like that,” she says of the struggles she felt growing up and feeling like she didn’t have many role models on TV and movies similar enough to her to admire. “Some comfort, huh? It should be noted that I was a very focused, odd kid. I hope this was helpful! And I hope you get everything you want.”
Her biggest acting influence is …
Emma Thompson, aka one of the greatest actresses of all time ever. Mindy Kaling: Just like us.
Her dream role/project
Kaling is basically all of us again with this one when she admits her dream role to play in a franchise would be a Marvel superhero. But of course, she’d be an evil one who’s in cahoots with Magneto. Maybe they could team up with Ursula and just make all our crossover dreams come true.
She also said if given an unlimited budget/risk leeway, she’d play Beatrice in Much Ado About Nothing since she doesn’t think any mainstream organization would sponsor it.
More AMAs from Mindy Kaling, please! And in the meantime, if she could just write 382,473 more books, that would be great. We’re not asking too much, right?
