You can see Laura Dern mouth blaster noises in “Last Jedi,” and it’s maybe the greatest thing ever

There’s “excited to be in Star Wars” and then there’s “Laura Dern excited to be in Star Wars.” The Emmy-winning actress has officially joined the Star Wars saga as Vice Admiral Amilyn Holdo, and for the past few months, she hasn’t been able to contain her excitement. When Laura Dern is excited for Star Wars: The Last Jedi, we’re all excited for Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

Since hitting the press circuit for the movie earlier this year, Dern has been talking about her sheer Star Wars glee, and how she was completely overcome with joy (and emotions) while on set filming. She cried hugging Chewbacca. She can’t stop cooing and tickling BB-8. And, maybe the best and most fangirl-y, when she was given a blaster in the movie, Dern couldn’t stop making “pew pew” noises every time she fired her weapon. Adorable, right?

Also, problematic. Dern explained (many times) her “pew pews” needed to be edited out in post-production (even though we would totally watch an entire Star Wars movie where Laura Dern provides all of the space sound effects. Just an idea!). There’s actually one moment in The Last Jedi where it is clear that, though you can’t hear her, Dern is mouthing “pew pew.”

Here’s the scene: Poe Dameron, being all dashing and commanding, has taken control of the Resistance ship. He’s secretly set up a mission for Finn and Rose to break into the nearby First Order ship, and stalls for time so they can turn off the tracking probe that the First Order is using to track them. Obviously. However, Holdo has ordered an evacuation of the ship, and is sending everyone out in escape pods. This doesn’t sit well with Poe.

So, in a brash move, he turns his weapons on Holdo. This doesn’t sit well with Holdo. She has the opportune moment to kick a nearby vent in the hangar bay, sending smoke into the air. In the chaos, she grabs a nearby blaster, and starts firing it. It’s then that we see her go, “pew pew.”

The moment happens very fast, so there’s a good chance you missed it. Go back and watch the Last Jedi (lol, like I have to tell you to do that), and you can see that as soon as Holdo raises the blaster up, the camera kinda zooms in a little too fast, and her arm goes up a little too fast; this is all to cover Dern’s mouth, which is going PEW PEW PEW PEW PEW.

It’s pretty great, and a clear frontrunner for the most ~iconic~ moment of Last Jedi. Long live Laura Dern’s pew pew pews.
