These are some of the last photos of Frida Kahlo—they’re gorgeous

Frida Kahlo, who is known for her vibrant self-portraits, tenacity, and turbulent marriage to artist Diego Rivera, has a special nook in my heart. Besides coveting her magical realism-influenced self-portraits and fangirling her influential wildness, I just think her life was fascinating —as well as so, so sorrowful and hard. Kahlo suffered from health issues her entire life —some of which stemmed from the car accident she was involved in as a teen, but the artist also had polio as a child, and possibly spina bifida. But Kahlo took her adversity, and she poured it into her artwork. And the emotion and energy really showed.

For all of us Frida lovers, there’s a new book which was published in March (Frida Kahlo: The Gisele Freund Photography), and it contains over 100 never-before-seen photographs of her and Rivera that German-French photographer Gisele Fruend took.

The photos are beautiful, capturing candid, intimate moments that make you feel as though you are right there with Kahlo. According to Slate, most of photos feature the artist in her home, La Casa Azul in Coyoacán, Mexico City —and often, she is pictured in her garden and Rivera in his studio. Fruend states, “She always preferred to photograph a person in her intimacy, in the middle of her personal objects, in her furniture, in this familiar universe. She said, ‘The décor of a home reflects the person who inhabits it. Catching someone next to the trinket he cherishes makes the photos more expressive.’ It is exactly what takes place here in Mexico in the house of the couple.”
