There might be a new lightsaber color in “The Last Jedi,” but it’s probably not the Pantone color of the year

Every fan of Star Wars — even casual ones — knows that lightsaber colors are a *pretty* big deal. With the exception of Mace Windu’s (Samuel L. Jackson) purple lightsaber in the the Star Wars prequels, the lightsabers we’ve seen on-screen have generally been very specific colors.

For the most part, all our evil Jedi and Sith lords — namely Darth Vader, Emperor Palpatine/Darth Sidious, Darth Maul, and even Kylo Ren — rock different styles of red lightsabers. Conversely — with Yoda and Luke Skywalker’s green lightsabers as a major exception — our good Jedi all wield blue lightsabers.

But brace yourself with the Force because it seems The Last Jedi will feature a brand-new lightsaber color.

According to the newest issue of Parade, The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson *hinted* that we’d see another lightsaber color on-screen. And this would be a pretty big deal.

Thanks to the greater Star Wars canon — namely animated series The Clone Wars and Rebels — we know that other lightsaber colors, including white and black, do exist. And Cinemablend points out that the existence of other colored lightsabers is also acknowledged in the Legends book series — which *isn’t* part of the official Star Wars canon.

Featuring a new lightsaber color is exciting, not only because it almost never happens in Star Wars films, but because it could have very serious story implications.

According to Cinemablend, Johnson could most likely be introducing a yellow lightsaber in The Last Jedi. (Sorry to all those hoping it’d be Pantone’s Color of the Year, Ultra Violet.) While not heavily featured in the Star Wars canon, yellow lightsabers have historically been used by the guards of Jedi temples. Based on the trailers, we know that the Jedi temples will factor heavily into The Last Jedi, as Kylo Ren destroyed a temple and killed a new generation of Jedi being trained by his uncle, Luke Skywalker. In effect, he forced the Jedi master into a self-imposed exile.

With Luke’s return to the fold and his guilt over the Jedi temple incident, it would definitely make sense if our new lightsaber color is also connected. So yeah, we’re incredibly curious about what Johnson’s coy admission means for The Last Jedi, and we definitely have a feeling we’ll be learning a *lot* more about the Jedi and their customs in the new film, which opens December 15th.
