One iconic “Star Wars” character won’t appear in “The Last Jedi” — and we hope wherever he is, he’s still got his swagger
Well, folks, it seems like we have a bit of bad news from a galaxy far, far away. Billy Dee Williams and his iconic Star Wars character — Lando Calrissian — won’t appear in next month’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Aww.
Audiences were first introduced to Lando Calrissian in The Empire Strikes Back.
When we first meet Lando, he’s a suave, scheming smuggler who could give Han Solo a run for his (stolen) money. He’s as cute as Han, as smart as Leia, and mischievous AF. It’s hard to trust him, but it’s really easy to fall in love with him. And since he’s a fan favorite, Williams — now 80 — has brought Lando to life in two Star Wars sequels and animated series Star Wars: Rebels and Robot Chicken. And he makes frequent convention appearances.
He’s definitely still got it! But there just wasn’t room for him in The Last Jedi (in theaters December 15th), apparently. Sad face.
BUT, fans will next see Lando Calrissian onscreen in Solo: A Star Wars Story, just a younger version of him.
In the Han Solo spinoff (in theaters May 2018), Young Lando will be played by none other than Donald Glover — the brilliant talent known for Atlanta, Community, 30 Rock, his stand-up, and his music career as Childish Gambino.
We’ll definitely miss Williams in the latest Star Wars entry, but at least one thing’s for sure: We won’t have to worry about Lando’s signature swagger in the Young Han Solo movie. Glover, without a doubt, has that in spades.
Or…the Sabacc deck equivalent.
