Even more important news on the new lady ‘Ghostbusters’ movie
In what might be one of the most epic girl power movies to date, the guy behind Bridesmaids and The Heat, Paul Feig, is re-booting Ghostbusters and it’ll be “ladies only.” If for some strange reason you haven’t heard this awesome news, the movie that originally starred Bill Murray, Harold Ramis, Dan Aykroyd, and Rick Morranis will now feature exclusively HILARIOUS actresses. So far, no cast has officially been announced, but we all secretly have our own dream cast. (Mine includes Lizzy Caplan, Emma Watson, and Allison Janney, in case you were wondering.) Feig has also let us in on a few secrets. He recently talked to Empire Magazine, and here’s what we learned from the chat:
It’s going to be scarier than the others
“I want ours to be scarier than the original, to be quite honest. We don’t want to hold back.” Oh, because a giant Stay Puff Marshmallow Man attacking the city isn’t the true definition of ‘scary’?
It’ll be PG-13, so you can take your kid sister to see it
Feig is best known for his R-rated comedies but, as he put it, “the Ghostbusters world doesn’t need that level of swearing.”
It was originally supposed to be the third film in the Ghostbusters trilogy
But, between script re-writes, and the original director, Ivan Reitman, exiting the project, along with the death of Ramis last year, a sequel just wouldn’t work. So, what better to do than reboot the whole thing? Feig also said that, he has “too much respect for the original one [to do a sequel].”
Feig completely believes in his lady-powered version “A lot of people accused it of being a gimmick,” Feig said. “I guess I can see the cynics’ view of it, but for me I just love working with funny women. People said, ‘Why don’t you do a mix?’ I’m just more interested in the idea of lady Ghostbusters. It’s the way my brain works.” Naturally, we believe in that idea 10,000%, too. Everyone wants to be in this movie. And rightly so. “Right now, honestly, there could be 50 Ghostbusters,” he told Empire. “I’m just waiting to get our first draft of the script together to go, ‘Who makes sense in these roles?’ If I put the list in front of me of people that have said they want to do it, talk about a Sophie’s Choice. When you do a movie like Ghostbusters, people get very interested.” There’s been lots and lots of talk about Rebel Wilson joining the cast, and that sounds like one of the best ideas ever. It won’t be called “Lady Ghostbusters.” Even though, if we’re being honest, we would totally see a movie called Lady Ghostbusters. Image via here.
