Lady Gaga, Blake Lively, Natalie Portman have all signed an open letter to support girls getting an education
A whole heap of famous names, including Lady Gaga and Blake Lively, have signed an open letter in a bid to support girls getting an education.
We’ve seen a whole string of celebrities trying to make the world a better place. For example, Idris Elba is offering a date to those willing to help young women in Africa, while Canadian duo Tegan and Sara launched their own foundation to help young LGBTQ+ girls and women.
Now around 81 of Hollywood’s biggest names have signed up to support the education of young women and girls living poverty around the world.
Put together by ONE, the campaign points out how even poverty is sexist, stating that “130 million girls across the world are denied this basic right” of education.
The “Poverty is Sexist” letter, which is addressed to global leaders, has been signed by the likes of Lady Gaga, Natalie Portman, Blake Lively, Charlize Theron, Danai Gurira, Rashida Jones, Bono, Neil Patrick Harris, and Robin Wright.
"You couldn’t be where you are today without a good education. But because poverty is sexist, 130 million girls across the world are denied this basic right. Indeed, if the number of girls out of school formed a country, it would be the tenth largest on the planet – bigger than Japan or Germany," the letter reads. "All children deserve a good education, but in the poorest countries girls are denied it more often than boys. Education is vital for moving out of poverty. Every additional year of school that a girl completes increases her future earnings, which is good for her family, her community and her country."
Continuing, the ONE campaign go on to say that we can continue to waste the talent and potential of 130 million girls so that they have the opportunities to go and do extraordinary things.
"Your education helped you to get where you are today – and it is in your power to help millions of girls to get theirs," the letter concludes. "Please act now, with the right policies and the necessary funds. Show us that politics can work for the people – starting with the people who need it most."
ONE is also asking the general public that they join the likes of Ryan Reynolds, Sacha Baron Cohen, Waje, Tanya Burr, and Isla Fisher in signing the letter, too. Their aim is to deliver it to world leaders on March 8th, which also happens to be International Women’s Day. You can sign up and find more information about the “Poverty is Sexist” campaign here.
