Meet the ladies gearing up to crush it in 2015
So, according to our Chinese horoscopes, 2015 is the year of the sheep — which means a happy dose of tranquility and harmony. That’s cool and all, but I also think that 2015 should be the year of the Powerful Ladies. If 2014 was any indicator — with all its high-profile bold and brilliant women — this year should follow suit.
So here’s to you, 2015. Our expectations are high. And these are just a few of the fine ladies who we are expecting to make huge splashes over the next 365 days.
Daisy Ridley
Very little is known about Daisy, and it’ll probably stay that way until December 18, 2015. That’s when Star Wars: The Force Awakens opens, in case you haven’t penciled it into your datebook yet. Daisy has been cast in the film, and that’s basically all we know about her. Who is she playing? What is she doing? Where is she going? Is the Force strong with this one? Your guess is as good as mine. But believe me when I say that even though we know nothing about her yet, soon she’s going to be EVERYWHERE.
The Women of Soccer
Remember this past summer when we were all super into the World Cup? How about taking that excitement, and adding ladies into the mix. Between June 5 and July 5 the FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada will take place, and I’m anticipating being fully glued to the television once again. Tickets are still available, and Canada isn’t too far away . . . just saying.
Dakota Johnson
Say what you want about 50 Shades of Grey, but we need to give credit where credit is due; and that means to Dakota Johnson. Not just anyone can step into the role of Anastasia, so Dakota needs major praise for the scrutiny that is going to come with the role. While the movie (and book) might not be everyone’s cup of tea, Dakota is clearly a pretty fierce lady to take on the part, and I can’t wait to see what she does next. (I also super-hearted the very short-lived Ben & Kate).
Saira Blair
Most of us don’t know any 18-year-old mayors (unless you count the fictional 18-year-old Ben Wyatt). Which means, it’s also unlikely that you know any state lawmakers under 18, unless you’re friends with Saira Blair, the 18 year old who defeated a 66-year-old incumbent for a spot in the West Virginia legislative. She ran the campaign out of her dorm room at West Virginia University! (I could barely do homework in my dorm room!) Saira plans to defer for the spring semester so she can attend the legislation’s 60-session and will then make her up classes in the summer and fall. You go, girl.
Rainbow Rowell
Rainbow Rowell is not a household name yet, but she should be and she will be. If you haven’t read Fangirl or Eleanor & Park, you need to get on that. She also just announced that her latest book, Carry On — based on the story within a story in Fangirl! — will be released in October. Which means, you’ve got about 10 months to catch up on everything she’s written. Also, DreamWorks picked up the rights to Eleanor & Park. Also she’s HILARIOUS. Also, I want to be her friend. We just straight up need more Rainbow in 2015.

Whenever I hear “Promises” or “OctaHate” I think I’m listening to a mix of Florence Welch and Lorde and I love it. With that in mind, here’s a new artist to get fully obsessed with, and her popularity is only going to grow after her album drops later this year.
Sure she made a splash in 2014, but the total cannon ball experience will happen in 2015; April 19, 2015 to be exact. That’s the day Misty Copeland will make her debut with the Washington Ballet in Swan Lake, as the title role of Odette/Odile. Not only that, but she’ll take the stage with an African-American partner, Brooklyn Mack, which Washington Ballet Artistic Director Septime Webre said will “provide a fresh take on this classic while challenging traditional notions of what a ballerina and principal male dancer should look like in the classical canon.” If there’s anyone who can take on the challenge, it’s Misty, who also don’t forget is also getting her own reality program which will focus on her mentorship of young dancers in NYC.
