Kylie Jenner just announced when she’s going to leave Instagram

No matter how popular you think you are on Instagram, there’s no way you can beat Kylie Jenner’s +1 billion photo likes in 2015.  But in a recent interview with Elle UK, whose February cover will be graced by the youngest Kardashian, Kylie let slip her plans to one day retire from social media altogether. And honestly, it’s pretty telling in terms of what fame looks like in 2016.

According to Kylie, the arrival of motherhood will mark her departure from the same social media platforms responsible for launching her career. “Once I have a kid I’m not going to be on Instagram,” said Kylie. “You know, I’ll probably delete my Instagram and just…I don’t know, live my life.”

This statement falls in stark contrast to the choices Kardashian sisters Kim and Kourtney have made in regards to their social presence as both mothers and celebrities. Kim, for example, boasts over 50 million followers on Instagram, and her daughter, North West, is a budding fashion icon. Similarly, every single one of Kourtney’s photos from her Best Nine 2015 grid, which collects the top nine most liked photos from your Instagram account, feature at least one of her three children.

The Kardashian’s are far from the first celebrities to share their experiences with motherhood on social media, but they are a dynasty that pretty consistently has people asking “….Wait so what are they, like, actually famous for?” Their image is their career, and to have their latest emerging star hint at a darker side to how they live their lives (or don’t) is pretty illuminating.

I am not at all one of those people who suggests unplugging from social media completely. But there is definitely something to be said for making a concerted effort to live life away from a screen, to being present in the unedited-ness of right now. And while Kylie may not have meant her statement to have such a deep meaning, I’m interpreting it as a little personal wake up call. Here’s to 2016 and living in the glorious mess.
