Here’s that never-heard Kurt Cobain mixtape we’ve been waiting for

Christmas came early for us Nirvana fans. A lost Kurt Cobain mixtape from 1988 surfaced to mainstream attention Monday — though it’s still unclear who unearthed it. The 36 minute mixtape, dubbed “Montage of Heck” is unlike you’ve anything you’ve ever heard from Nirvana and gives a real window into Cobain’s troubled mind.

The mixtape starts off [creepily] with a lo-fi sample of Mike Douglas’ “Men In My Little Girl’s Life” and moves into a nightmarish well . . . “montage of heck.” As Nylon so artfully puts it, the mixtape “[features] snippets of both satanic and barfing sounds (as well as an exorcism) … to bites from songs by The Velvet Underground, Simon and Garfunkel, and Butthole Surfers.”

It might not be what you would expect with the “Kurt Cobain mixtape,” but true fans will see splashes of the Cobain they love garbled among the frenzied sounds. Give a listen to the slew of chaotic samples below. Maybe Christmas came early, but maybe Halloween just came a little late? Either way, we’re psyched.
