The trailer for the Kurt Cobain documentary ‘Montage of Heck’ is wrenching our hearts
Just yesterday, HBO treated the world to a trailer for the critically-acclaimed (and notably authorized) Kurt Cobain documentary, Montage of Heck. Though the documentary isn’t slated to premiere on television until May 4th, the two and a half minute trailer is a peek into what looks like a totally eye-opening and brilliant film. And a heartbreaking one too.
Made in cooperation with his family, Montage of Heck director Bret Morgen paints a picture of Cobain’s life with rare home videos, photographs, interviews and splices of Cobain’s personal artwork.
The trailer traces Cobain’s innocent beginnings as a towheaded little boy playing with toy guitars, to his life as a conflicted rock legend. It also hits on Cobain’s life with Courtney Love featuring home videos of Cobain and Love coddling their baby girl, Frances Bean. Though undeniably wrenching, Montage of Heck is sure to be a beautiful homage to Cobain. One of the strongest moments in the trailer is demonstrative of just how intimate this whole film looks; his mother in an interview recalls a conversation with Kurt about his pending fame, “I said, ‘You better buckle up because you are not ready for this.’”
Aside from the film, Insight Additions published a companion book which will feature “a mixture of animation stills, rare photography and other treasures from Kurt Cobain’s personal archive.” The book will hit shelves on April 7th, a little less than a month before the film’s television premiere. In addition to the book, Bret Morgen revealed this week that the film’s soundtrack will feature “a mind-blowing 12-minute acoustic Cobain unheard track“.
