Krysten Ritter blasts the sexist idea that kids won’t play with female superhero toys

There are a million reasons to love Krysten Ritter. She portrays strong female characters like Jessica Jones, Marvel’s first female superhero with her own TV show. And she’s outspoken about how much it’s positively impacted pop culture.

Krysten was recently a guest on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, and the conversation turned to the success of Jessica Jones. “It’s really exciting to be on a show that I love, but also has made such a positive cultural impact,” she said.

At one point during their conversation, Colbert brought up a recent news item that the villain in Iron Man 3 was originally supposed to be a woman, but was changed to a man. The reason? The studio didn’t think a female villain would be able to sell as many toys.

“Girls can sell toys!” Krysten exclaimed, frustrated. “I don’t know if there is [a Jessica Jones toy] yet, but there should be, and I bet it would sell huge, and I’m gonna make some phone calls after this.”
