Kristen Wiig is the reason we don’t have a “Bridesmaids” sequel yet
Since literally every movie ever seems to be getting a sequel lately, you might be wondering, as we all are, where is Paul Feig’s Bridesmaids sequel? Like, it has been six years since the original. The whole cast remains at the top of their game and at the top of the box office. Where, oh where, is part two?
Turns out, the reason we haven’t gotten it yet basically comes down to Kristen Wiig, and her character. When asked about a potential sequel at the Tribeca Film Festival, Paul Feig said:
"It’s really up to Kristen, but also, sequels are dangerous. People always say they want a sequel to Bridesmaids but the whole reason that movie worked was [Kristen Wiig’s character] is a mess and she learned how to repair her life, so you can’t do a sequel and she’s a mess and has to repair her life again. And people tend to think the artifice around all that is what made the movie great, but it was really that emotional journey and so, you almost kind of have to be careful of it.
We totally respect that Paul Feig is centering the character’s arc when thinking about a sequel. While we def love getting more of our favorite characters and stories, it’s absolutely true that sometimes sequels happen when they really don’t need to. Since Bridesmaids was so driven by the actresses and characters, it makes sense that it’s up to them when it comes to going in on round two.
Whether or not Bridesmaids 2 happens, we’re looking forward to whatever Paul Feig and Kristen Wiig do next.
