Kristen Stewart opened up about coming out and how she hopes it might help others

When Kristen Stewart hosted Saturday Night Live, it made the news. Yes, her episode was truly strong, but she also did something clever with her monologue. Kristen Stewart openly said she was gay while discussing a past issue regarding both her ex, Robert Pattinson, and Donald Trump.

During the middle of her funny speech, Stewart referred to herself as being “like, so gay.” And she was met with a round of applause, which was incredibly well deserved. After all, she’s been notably private about relationships and her love life.

In fact, back in the day, it was tough to confirm whether she was even dating anyone, let alone in an exclusive relationship.

We respect any decision she makes, of course, but we have to admit — we were a little curious about what made her change her mind about speaking up about it. And on live television, no less.

While many had whispered about Stewart’s sexuality for years, Stewart never wanted to put a label on it. She didn’t necessarily hide it, but it wasn’t an open fact — or something she willingly brought up herself in interviews.

"As much as I want to protect myself, it's not about hiding. As soon as you start throwing up so many walls, you cannot see over them yourself, so you just start isolating in a way that's not honest," she said last year to Variety.

The change of heart likely happened because Stewart realized that while her life was definitely her own, she was in a position to help others and make a difference. So while she prefers privacy, she knew that going public could potentially be an inspiration to others around her.

"Considering I had so many eyes on me, I suddenly realized [my private life] affects a greater number of people than just me, she said to The Sunday Times. “It was an opportunity to surrender a bit of what was mine, to make even one other person feel good about themselves."

Stewart, who is currently dating model Stella Maxwell, also believed that coming out “just seemed important, and topical.”

We totally agree with her, and we’re so happy that she seems happy. If you want to see more of Kristen, her latest film, Personal Shopper, will be out on March 10th.
