Kristen Bell uses a controversial tactic to put her daughter to sleep, and we’ll let you decide how to feel

Kristen Bell always keeps it real. Whether she’s discussing her marriage to Dax Shepard or her anxiety issues, she keeps it 100, and we love her for that. Which is why it’s no surprise that she recently opened up about a controversial strategy she uses to put her daughter to sleep.

The actress shared the difficulties she’s been experiencing with her 3-year-old daughter, Delta, when it comes to bedtime.

"Look, I'll get controversial," Bell told Parents magazine. "My 3 year old [Delta] decided to stop sleeping about nine months ago. And every night, when we put her to bed, she turns the lights on, which annoys the 4 year old [Lincoln], and she will move furniture, and she bangs on the door with different, hard toys. We switched the door knob. We turned the lock on the outside."

Yes, the stars lock their daughter in her bedroom. But before you star to get a little judge-y and worry about the toddler’s safety, Bell clarifies that she and Shepard do unlock her door — eventually.

“I’m sorry, I know that’s controversial, but we lock it when she gets in there, and we stand outside and say, ‘We love you, we will talk to you in the morning, but now, it’s time for sleep.’ And after about 10 minutes, she’ll wind herself down. And then, before we go to bed, obviously, we unlock it,” she said.

Bell’s parenting tactic might not be for everyone, but that’s the beauty of parenting — everyone’s coping strategies are different. Though it might not be your preference, if it works for Bell, Shepard, and Delta, then that’s all that really matters.

Last year, Bell shared the “mom hack” she uses to keep her kids safe when they’re getting out of the car. In a technique they call “Hands on the circle,” Bell and Shepard have their daughters put their hands on the car’s gas cap while mom and dad unload groceries or make sure the road or parking lot is clear and safe.

In an Instagram post, Bell wrote that the hack “was invented by my brilliant sister-in-law, and has thus far kept all kiddos safe from any oncoming traffic while I unload the trunk.”

Parenting isn’t easy, and parents often second-guess themselves, so it’s refreshing for a celeb like Bell to be so real about her biggest challenges.
