Kristen Bell reveals the one piece of advice she used when giving her daughters the sex talk
You already know that Kristen Bell is funny, talented, and super smart but you probably didn’t realize that she also gives the best sex advice ever. HelloGiggles had a chance to chat with Bell at an event for This Bar Saves Lives, a brand she co-founded with Ryan Devlin, Todd Grinnell, and Ravi Patel. This Bar Saves Lives offers non-GMO, gluten-free, kosher snack bars made from premium, better-for-you ingredients. While we were there, we talked to Bell about her adorable family, and she revealed the one piece of advice she used when giving her daughters the sex talk.
What does a snack bar have to do with sex education? Well, not much, to be honest, but as you may already know, Bell has been a staunch supporter of the Time’s Up movement, and hasn’t been shy when it comes to talking about it. Remember her opening monologue for the 2018 SAG Awards, in which she had some powerful words about the movement and the need for change in Hollywood (and society in general)?
Knowing her support for the movement, we talked to Bell about what it’s like to navigate that with her kids (Bell has two daughters, Delta and Lincoln).
She said, “We talk very bluntly, in some people’s opinion, to our children about everything. They asked about sex. We said there’s a penis. There’s a vagina. There’s an ovum. There’s ejaculate. They combine. There’s DNA. Then you grow in my belly.”
We love the direct, straight-forward information here — it’s super helpful and a great way to get kids to understand biology. But the best advice Bell gives is something she heard from another actress. She said,
"Side note. Best advice ever was given to me by Michelle Monaghan. She said, 'When you explain to your kids about sex, boys or girls, don't say the man puts his penis inside the woman's vagina. Change one word. Say the woman takes the man's penis and puts it in her vagina. You've re-written the story.'"
It’s kind of the best sex advice we’ve ever heard. Let us all learn from Kristen Bell and Michelle Monaghan.
