A baby born in Canada is the first child without a gender designation on their health card

Peanut butter, Anne of Green Gables, and Ryan Reynolds have topped our list of favorite things from Canada for ages. Now, we’re embracing this parent fighting to let their child choose their own gender. Kori Doty identifies as a gender non-binary person and is making their mark on history by opting to raise their child outside of the gender binary. Doty gave birth to Searyl Atli last November and has since proven themselves a parent to be reckoned with by campaigning to give their baby a genderless start and a life without labels,

Since giving birth to their baby in November, Doty has not assigned their baby a gender.

According to CBC News Network, Doty fought hard to have their child receive a health card marked with a “U” under gender which stands for “undetermined” or “unassigned.” While the government has so far refused to give the baby a certificate without a gender assignment, the health card is already proving to be a huge victory. Searyl is the first known baby to not be assigned a gender at birth.

Doty is advocating on their baby’s behalf to choose their own gender because of the negative effects Doty experienced being assigned the wrong gender at their own birth.

“When I was born, doctors looked at my genitals and made assumptions about who I would be, and those assignments followed me and followed my identification throughout my life,” Doty told CBC News. “Those assumptions were incorrect, and I ended up having to do a lot of adjustments since then.”
